FHU Soccer Signs Four

HENDERSON, Tenn. – April 28, 2008 – Freed-Hardeman Lion and Lady Lion soccer coach Jason Elliott has been busy on the recruiting trail. Elliott recently announced the signing of four players, three to the men’s team and one to the women’s team.

Olivia Poteete, a 5-foot-9 goalkeeper, prepped at Madison Academic Magnet High School in Jackson, Tenn., where she played for Coach Jeremy Honors. She was named to the all-district and all-tournament teams in 2007. She is the daughter of Eddie and Dana Poteete.

“We are excited to have Olivia coming to join us this fall,” said Elliott. “She has good size and instincts in goal and will develop into a solid collegiate goalkeeper.”

Kevin Jamieson, a 5-foot-8 midfielder, played at Gulf Shores (Ala.) High School before moving to Columbia, Tenn., where he plays at Columbia Academy. Jamieson received several awards at Gulf Shores including selection to the All-Metro second team. He has scored 35 goals and accumulated 30 assists through his junior season. He has also played for the Blast Soccer Club in Fairhope, Ala. Kevin is the son of Mark and Suzy Jamieson.

“Kevin is an exciting player that will have a good career here at FHU,” Elliott said. “His knowledge of the game and field awareness should enable him to help us in the midfield or in an attacking role.”

Ryan Smith, a 5-foot-11 sweeper from Canton, Ohio, prepped at Perry High School under Coach Mike Furlong. He is a two-time all-county selection and was chosen to play in the Greater Akron All-Star Game in 2007. Ryan is the son of Ken and Kelly Smith.

“Ryan has played at a very high level in Ohio and we are excited he has chosen FHU,” said Elliott. “He is a defender who plays with great intensity. I expect him to strengthen our back four immediately.”

Joshua Oberlin, a 5-foot-7 midfielder from Canton, Ohio, prepped at Canton South High School under Coach Rick White. He has scored 41 goals in his high school career as a four-year starter and has received numerous honors including being named district MVP as a junior and a senior. Oberlin and Smith were teammates for Boca United in club soccer. He is the son of Steve and Pam Oberlin.

“Josh is one of the top players we wanted to sign,” Elliott said. “We were impressed with his movement off the ball as well as his unselfish play while attacking. He will be a big part of our team in August.

FHU Soccer Players Earn Academic Awards
Henderson, Tenn. – The TranSouth Athletic Conference has released its scholar athlete team, and fourteen Lion and Lady Lion soccer players received the honor. To qualify, a student must be a sophomore or above in academic standing and hold a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better.

2007 Lion Soccer Campaign Ends with Messy Game against Bethel
Henderson, Tenn. – After two straight days of rain, the condition of the field at the Josh Riley Soccer Complex was less than ideal, however the Freed-Hardeman University Lion soccer team took the field on Tuesday night for the last match of the season against the TranSouth’s second best team, Bethel College. The Lions gave an all out effort, holding the heavily favored Wildcats to only two goals, but fell 2-0 to the visitors.

Lions Fight Hard, Come up Short Against TranSouth Leader
Henderson, Tenn. – Despite hosting TranSouth Conference leader and favorite, Lambuth University, the Freed-Hardeman University Lion soccer team put up a valiant effort, but came up short 2-0 against the Eagles on Tuesday night.

Lions Get Big Win over Crichton
Memphis, Tenn. – The Freed-Hardeman University men’s soccer team won a key game over the Crichton Comets on Saturday afternoon in Memphis. The Lions started slowly, but persevered for a much needed 3-1 conference victory.

Lions Drop a Heartbreaker to Cumberland
Lebanon, Tenn. – The Freed-Hardeman University men’s soccer team traveled to Lebanon, Tenn. on Tuesday for a TranSouth Conference matchup with the Cumberland University Bulldogs. Cumberland came away with a hard fought 1-0 victory.

Lions Stung in Double Overtime
Henderson, Tenn. - Still chasing that first win, a struggling Freed-Hardeman University Lion soccer team took visiting Harris-Stowe State University down to the wire, falling 0-1 in double overtime on Friday night.

Lions Soccer Loses Defensive Battle Against the Scots
Henderson, Tenn. – Still looking for the first win of the 2007 season, the Freed-Hardeman University Lion soccer team hosted Lyon College on Saturday afternoon. However, after several missed scoring opportunities, the Lions fell 0-3 to the visiting Scots.

Lions and Lady Lions Shutout by Martin Methodist

LIONS DROP CLOSE ONE TO DELTA STATE
Cleveland, Miss. – The Freed-Hardeman University men’s soccer team lost a tough one on Tuesday afternoon against Delta State University. The game remained scoreless until the 87th minute when Delta State sent home the game winner.
