AV Annex
Located on the first floor of the Draughon Education Center, adjacent to the Loden-Daniel Library, the Annex houses the library's collection of audiovisual materials. The Library Annex provides several study rooms that accommodate video and DVD viewing, as well as listening stations for records, tapes and CDs. All audiovisual services, such as laminating and transparencies and TV/VCR requests for classrooms, are handled in the Library Annex. It is also the home of the FLIX Collection, a collection of recent and classic DVDs available to the student body.
Archives & Special Collections
The historic Old Main Administration Building provides a poignant architectural framework for the Archives & Special Collections. The Collections, covering almost 139 years of University history, are found on the first floor in the Roland Historical Room. Nearly 30,000 objects and 500 linear feet of documents are available for research. Because of the special—and very fragile—nature of many of these materials, they can only be used on-site. Patrons will be trained in proper handling techniques, and are kindly requested to follow the directions of the Archivist when using original materials. Space is available for group instruction. Digitization of original records will begin Fall 2008, providing an unprecedented level of access to patrons.
Loan Periods
Archives & Special Collections items will be checked out to individuals, who demonstrate compliance with the handling requirements of the original materials. Materials cannot be taken off site and must be returned to the Archivist before leaving the facility. Organizations wishing to borrow items for an extended period of time may do so, in compliance with established policy and procedure. Please contact the University Archivist to make these arrangements.
Community Patrons
The value in our historical collections is made even richer through the interaction of all University constituents. We welcome any and all interested people to visit the Archives & Special Collections. Special themed exhibitions are featured on a rotating basis. Research materials can be made available to all parties willing to demonstrate compliance with the handling requirements of the original materials.
Security
Patrons will be requested to sign in and out of the Research Register at each visit to the Archives & Special Collections, so that we may facilitate the retrieval of items that may have been taken out of the Room.
Confidentiality
Materials in the Archives & Special Collections may contain records or objects that are subject to certain access limits. We kindly request that Patrons follow all guidelines of the Archivist with respect to these items.
Copies
The Archives & Special Collections will fulfill reproduction requests on a case-by-case basis. The fragile condition of many of the items will determine what types of reproduction can be used. The intended use of the reproduction must also be stated at the time of reproduction. The University does not hold copyright and trademark rights to all the items in its Collections. The University’s Intellectual Property Policy will hold sway in this matter. The Archives & Special Collections reserves the right to deny requests for access to materials if it will be detrimental the collection.

Reserves
Instructors often place personal books and AV items, photocopied materials and circulating library materials on reserve for their students’ use. These materials are housed at the appropriate Circulation Desk. These materials may be checked out at the Main Circulation Desk for 1 hour or for 2 days, depending upon the instructions of the instructor. Materials at the AV Circulation Desk may be checked out for 4 hours. The faculty member may also stipulate that particular items not leave the library.

Materials are removed from reserves after final exams of each term. They may be left on reserve if the class will be taught the following school term. Items not picked up by faculty will be returned to them via campus mail or office delivery.

Fines for reserves at the Main Circulation Desk are $.25 per hour with a $4.00 maximum charge per day. Fines for reserves at the AV Circulation Desk are $.25 per hour.

Items left on reserve are searchable by instructor or class through the library's search engine. Some items are even available online, accessible from home or the dorms. To search reserves by class or instructor, go to: Class Reserves
Community, WeTALC and Affiliate Patrons
If you're not currently enrolled or employed at Freed-Hardeman, you are still welcome in the library! All collections are open for use within the library, and a number of computers may be used for research by visitors to the campus. To check materials out of the library, visitors can apply for a community, WeTALC, or affiliate library card:

Community Patron
Library visitors not currently enrolled or employed at FHU can get for a community patron card by completing an application form (including SSN) available at the main circulation desk. You must be at least a junior in high school and be able to present a valid form of ID to apply for a card. The library card costs $10.00 and is valid for three years. Community patrons may have up to three items checked out at a time and, with a completed form and payment, you may immediately begin checking out items on your first visit. A permanent library card will then be made and can be picked up during your second visit to Loden-Daniel Library. Following the second visit, community patrons must bring their library cards to check out materials. The loan period is two weeks, subject to the school's schedule, and late fees are $0.10 per day. There is also a minimum fee for lost books of $50 plus a $7 service charge per lost book. You may renew a book once if the book has not been reserved by another patron, and renewing must be done in the library with the item present. The community patron card is non-transferrable and does not carry any privileges in departments, events, or buildings elsewhere on campus.

WeTALC Patron
Library visitors currently enrolled in a nearby college or university may have borrowing privileges at FHU as well. Through WeTALC (the West Tennessee Academic Library Consortium), students at the following schools can apply for an FHU WeTALC card: Jackson State Community College, Lambuth, Union, Lane, Bethel, Dyersberg State Community College, University of Memphis, Christian Brothers University, UT at Martin, UT at Memphis. The WeTALC library card is free, and is valid as long as you are enrolled at the participating school. To get the card, you can complete an application form (including SSN) available at the main circulation desk. You also must present a current I.D. from the WETALC institute you attend when applying and each time you check out items. WeTALC patrons may have up to three items checked out at a time and, with you may immediately begin checking out items on your first visit. A permanent library card will then be made and can be picked up during your second visit to Loden-Daniel Library. The WeTALC patron card is non-transferrable and does not carry any privileges in departments, events, or buildings elsewhere on campus.

Affiliate Patron
Affiliate patron cards are available to faculty and staff spouses and children (at least a junior in high school), retired faculty, and board members. The card is free and is available by completing an application form (including SSN) available at the main circulation desk. Affiliate patrons may have up to three items checked out at a time and you may immediately begin checking out items on your first visit. A permanent library card will then be made and can be picked up during your second visit to Loden-Daniel Library. Following the second visit, affiliate patrons must bring their library cards to check out materials. The loan period is two weeks, subject to the school's schedule, and there are no late fees. There is a minimum fee for lost books of $50 plus a $7 service charge per lost book. You may renew a book once if the book has not been reserved by another patron, and renewing must be done in the library with the item present. The affiliate patron card is non-transferrable and does not carry any privileges in departments, events, or buildings elsewhere on campus.
Renewals
Books from the general collection may be renewed once after the initial checkout if not requested by another patron. All materials can either be renewed online or in person with the items in hand. No renewals will be handled over the phone, except for members of the the Honors College who may renew materials once without returning them. No materials may be renewed once they are overdue. The library retains the right to deny renewal of materials to visitors.

To renew online, log on to your library account at: Library Account
Overdues and Lost Items
FHU students and visitors will be charged late fines for materials returned after the designated due date. Email notices will be sent to FHU school email accounts on a regular basis. However, failure to receive a notice does not exempt the patron from the obligation to return loaned materials or pay fines incurred. This applies to reserves as well as regular circulating materials. Faculty, staff, and administration are not charged fines for most overdue materials, though overdue notices will be sent. The only exception is for the FLIX Collection of popular DVDs, where faculty, staff, and administration are subject to overdue fines.

Library fines for Main Circulation items accrue at the rate of $.10 per item /per day. Library fines for most AV Circulation items accrue at the rate of $.10 per hour. Exceptions are: AV tape and CD fines, at $.25 per day, and FLIX fines, at $1.00 per day. Anyone with overdue items will not be allowed to check out further items until overdue materials are returned.

Items more than four weeks overdue will automatically be considered lost by the library system. After that time, student accounts will be billed for the replacement cost of the materials, a $5.00 processing fee as well as a $2.00 service charge. The replacement cost will be a minimum of $50.00 and could be more depending on the rarity of the item. An additional $5.00 binding fee will be charged for paperbacks. Individuals may purchase a copy of the lost item on their own and give it to the library to avoid paying the $50 replacement fee, provided this occurs before the library has purchased its own replacement. The $7 processing fee and service charge is still applicable in this situation.

The automatic minimum $57 charge will be refunded (minus appropriate overdue fees) if the item is returned:
  1) within six months after acquiring a lost status AND
  2) before a replacement is purchased by the library.
Any item returned after replacement or after six months will not be refunded.
Hold / Recall
If a patron needs materials currently checked out to someone else, a hold may be placed on those materials. Holds may be placed through LIONET, the online catalog, or in person at the Circulation Desk. The patron needing these materials will be notified when the materials are available and will have priority in checking them out. If the materials are overdue and are needed immediately, a recall may be placed. In this event, the patron in possession of the materials will be notified to return the materials as soon as possible. Recalls must be placed in person at the Circulation desk. This service is only available to FHU faculty and students.
Missing Materials
If a patron is unable to locate a book he/she may fill out a form requesting a search. A staff person will verify the information on the form and conduct an initial search for the materials. If, after this search, the book is not found, the form will be turned over to the circulation supervisor to conduct further searches during a one week time period. If the book is located, the patron will be notified that the book is available. If the book is not located, the patron will be advised to use ILL to obtain the book. Only FHU faculty, staff, and students may use ILL at FHU; however patrons from other institutions may use their own library ILL to obtain materials. Once it has been determined that the missing book cannot be located, the circulation supervisor will add a copy of the book's records to an acquisitions file to be considered by the Library Director for repurchase.
Security
The library uses a 3M electronic detection system to monitor the unauthorized removal of materials. The system is completely safe. It will not erase tapes, disks, or cassettes. The 3M system detects through bags, briefcases, and clothing. If the alarm sounds, circulation personnel will stop the person exiting the gate and ask to see materials in bags, purses, backpacks, etc. The circulation staff is at liberty to identify the probable cause of the alarm sounding.
Conduct
An atmosphere conducive to reading and study is maintained at all times. Students are to cooperate by being quiet and courteous, or they will be asked to leave the library. Disruptive behavior will not be tolerated. Groups working together are encouraged to work quietly. There is a designated quiet study area on the 2nd floor.

Food and drinks are allowed in the library. Please dispose of any wrappers or containers and try to keep the library clean.

Appropriate dress is the same as for class attendance. (See FHU Student Handbook) FHU is a tobacco-free environment. No smoking or use of tobacco in any form will be allowed in the library
Confidentiality
The library follows the American Library Association’s Code of Ethics in keeping all borrower records confidential.
Copiers
The copiers in the library are available for patron use. Currently there are three copiers in the main circulation area of the building and 1 in the audiovisual department. The cost is $.10 per copy for black and white, $.50 per copy for color copies. A bypass key is available when making numerous copies to avoid the necessity of change. Payment for these copies is to be made when the key is returned. When using the bypass key, the patron will be required to leave his/her ID at the circulation desk until the copier use is completed. When both sides are copied, the cost is $.10 per side (or copy). When the patron provides paper, the cost is still $.10 per copy. If the patron has an insufficient amount of money available, the copies will be charged to her/his account. Copies made for departmental use may be charged to the department.

The library staff is responsible for any adjustments needed to the library copiers. Library patrons are discouraged from correcting problems for themselves, such as paper jams, replacement paper, etc. When the toner needs replacing, a member of the library staff should be notified.
