The Mid-South Youth Camp Advisory Board met for its annual summer meeting at Kirk Dining Hall on Saturday, July 28, 2007.  Board members in attendance were Frank Bell, Larry Bloomingburg, Frank Bradford, Ronnie and Dana Branch, Kim Spears Cook, Robert Farrow, Larry and Cindy Harper, Paul and Elizabeth Harris, Bob Landon, Gayle McDonald, John Mehr, James Rogers, Jack and Gean Seward, Roy and Jan Sharp, Billy Spears, Boo and Rose Spears, Gabby Spears, Yogie and Betty Spears, Greg and Kelley Swims, Richard Taylor Jr., and Burton Williams. Guests included Scott and Christy Miskelly and Ally Rogers.

Camp director Frank Bradford opened the business meeting, presiding in the absence of Chairman Jeff Spears.  He thanked the board for their many expressions of care and sympathy during Beverly’s illness and death.

The 2007 camp season has been a successful one with numbers of campers, repeat campers and junior campers up significantly.  Bradford expressed appreciation to his assistant directors Frank Bell and Gayle McDonald and to his junior camp director, Ally Rogers, for their roles in making the summer run so smoothly.  Improvements to the facilities noted this summer are bathhouse renovations, new lighting in the Kirk Dining Hall and newly remodeled teaching stations.

Lauren Goodman, a former camper, was recognized for her efforts in updating the MSYC website, which will now include videos.

Richard Taylor Jr. presented the completed financial statement for the camp’s last fiscal year with the following highlights:  the special projects fund is in the red only because of the one-time bathhouse renovations, the net loss for camp operations is the smallest in five years and the camp’s permanent endowment fund now stands at $228,000.00.

Board chairman, Boo Spears, entered the meeting at this point and began presiding.

The only item of old business alluded to was the purchase of four-wheeler which has already been well utilized this summer.

Scott Miskelly, FNP, was recognized for his medical consultation with the camp.

Mention was made that the majority of camp counselors on their exit interviews encouraged the decrease of next year’s camp season to eight weeks (because of conflicts with the endings and beginnings of school terms in the majority of affected counties.)  Motion was made by Cindy Harper to decrease camp sessions to eight weeks and adjusted to coincide with the majority of West Tennessee school calendars.  The motion was seconded by Larry Harper, discussion ensued positively and negatively, motion passed.

A discussion of the weekly camp tuition was tabled until the November meeting.

A tree has been planted in Beverly Bradford’s memory on the campgrounds and will be noted with a memorial plaque.

Larry Harper closed the meeting with a prayer.
