Mid-South Youth Camp
Advisory Board Meeting
October 21, 2006
The Mid-South Youth Camp Advisory Board met for its annual fall meeting at Wallace-Gano Dining Hall on Saturday, October 21, 2006. Board members in attendance were Frank Bradford, Robert Farrow, Cindy Harper, Larry Kail, Andy and Doris Maness, Gayle McDonald, John Mehr, Betty Neilson, James and Altha Rogers, Jack and Gean Seward, Milton Sewell, Roy and Jan Sharp, Jeff Spears, Gabby Spears, New Members Greg and Kelley Swims, Richard Taylor, Jr., Burton Williams, and Mitch and Natalie Zlatovich. Guests included James Farrow, Amy Neilson, Rene and Teresa Puente, and Lenita Powers.
Chairman Jeff Spears opened the business meeting. Frank Bradford gave thanks for the food.
Frank Bradford had a power point of the climbing wall and zip line.
Richard Taylor, Jr. distributed financial statements to board members for both the camp’s Status of Special Project Fund and Normal Operations. The Financial Report on the First Eleven Fishing Rodeos was also reviewed. Along the lines of the Fishing Rodeo, Randy Sullivan will no longer be able to help with the fishing rodeo. We will need more people to step up to the plate to help.
Old Business:
Jack Seward suggested locks on thermostats in cabins to help keep down heating costs. Richard Taylor, Jr. suggested that more will be done to contain costs. Also, James Rogers asked a question about insurance coverage for the camp. Frank Bradford assured those present that ropes course participants, campers, and retreat renters are all covered and the camp has liability coverage. The camp’s insurance provider has copies of the risk factors and a 20 year safety study.
Retreats at the camp are booked through Thanksgiving. Christmas and New Years are already booked. We recently let two groups use the camp for PR. They are the Boy Scouts (they recently put in benches on our ropes course) and Southwest Tennessee Electric Membership Corporation (they donated approximately $10,000 worth of equipment and labor for the climbing wall and ropes course). We are hoping to get some publicity from the latter – perhaps a write up in Tennessee Magazine.
Renovation of Bathhouses – the men’s facility charges for renovation to date are approximately $11,000. A great job has been done! The men’s will be completed before work on the Women’s bathhouse begins – this has been approved by the board.
Larry Harper has contacted John Deere for a 4 wheel all terrain vehicle for camp. A price of $5800 was quoted. (This information was available after the meeting and was not tabled for discussion)
Burton Williams gave a report on endowment to MSYC through FHU. Two gifts were received from the estate of Jimmy and Lisa Kee totaling $78,531.10 ($74,336.62 and $4,194.48). Existing MSYC Edowment Fund was valued on May 31, 2006 at $1,535.28. There is also an endowed campership fund which provides funding each year for a week of camp for two deserving campers. Burton made the motion that the recent gifts from the Kee estate to the existing MSYC Endowment Fund. The motion was passed and it will be done.
The Lectureship BBQ is coming up in February. Our date is again the Monday of Lectureships. A Sign-up list for this will be posted on our Website. We will send a mail out with the list of items needed with the minutes. Please call the office at 731-989-6987 to sign up.
The land sale in Alamo is still in progress.
New Business:
Frank Bradford reported that with the University’s new Content Management Policy, each department can maintain and update its own website now (effective November 11). Frank Bradford and Lenita Powers have both received training to be able to do this.
Happy 90th Birthday to Marie Colvett!
The closing prayer was led by Mr. Gabby Spears.
Next camp board meeting will be March 11, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. Brunch will be served in the President’s Dining Room of Wallace Gano Cafeteria.
