Mid-South Youth Camp

June 7, 2005

The Mid-South Youth Camp Advisory Board met for its annual summer meeting at Gano Dining Hall on Tuesday, June 7, 2005. Board members in attendance were Frank Bell, Larry Bloomingburg, Frank and Beverly Bradford, Dana Branch, John and Marilyn Dodd, Robert Farrow, Cissy Gooch, Larry and Cindy Harper, Larry Kail, Ralph Maynard, John McCaskill, Gayle McDonald, Betty Neilson, James and Altha Rogers, Jack and Gean Seward, Boo and Rose Spears, Yogi and Betty Spears, Danny Sullivan, Richard Taylor, Jr., David and Sherry Thomas, Lindsey and Susan Warren,Burton and Nicole Williams and Joan Williams. Guests attending were Tony Allen, Sandy Cravens, Amy Neilson, Lenita Powers and Amanda Whitworth.

Board members Marie Colvett (congestive heart failure) and Jane Magee (cancer) were remembered in prayer.

After the evening meal, Camp Director Frank Bradford introduced Tony Allen to the board. Allen is serving as the director of “Lion Adventure Programming” – F-H U’s new ropes course. The course is being constructed on the MSYC property and will be utilized by the university, the camp and the community for team building, the development of problem solving, communication skills and group dynamics, as well as for fun and adventure. Although an initial training session has already been completed at the facility, the program is not yet accredited but should prove to be a useful tool for both the university and the surrounding communities.

The board reconvened at the camp after Allen’s presentation and shared the evening devotional with the campers.

Board chairman Robert Farrow conducted the business meeting following the devotional.

Frank Bradford introduced this summer’s staff to the board. Board members Gayle McDonald and Frank Bell are serving as assistant camp directors. Sandy Cravens is in charge of applications processing, placement and staffing. Lenita Powers is Bradford’s secretary and is working with camp crafts. Amanda Whitworth is assisting in registration and crafts. Susan Warren is the on-call camp nurse and Beverly Bradford is in charge of Frank! Bradford stated that he was excited about his first year as director and that, although changes would come, they would be implemented gradually.

Bradford made the board aware of an opportunity to purchase a used Kubota tractor and mower for $3500. The equipment would be used solely on camp property and would decrease our dependence on the university’s maintenance staff. After discussion by the board, their consensus was that the money might be more needed to complete the work on the second pool. Further negotiations on the matter will be reported on the website (www.fhu.edu/msyc).

The board held a successful Work Day on the camp property on May 7 and had another successful Fishing Rodeo on May 14.

Richard Taylor briefly discussed the financial report on the camps first 10 fishing rodeos. This year’s event netted over $5000 with the net profit for all 10 rodeos now exceeding $45,000.

Some discussion ensued regarding the safety of the camp’s portable dining room tables. Recent testing has shown them to be relatively safe. They have now been used at the camp for more than 2 decades without injury.

The nominating committee appointed to name the recipient of this year’s Pierce-Alexander Award are Cindy Harper, Betty Neilson, Denise Rinks and Jan Sharp.

A discussion of meeting times for the board was introduced by Jack Seward. In the discourse that followed it was noted that some members can only attend weekend meetings and others can only attend weeknight meetings. Older board members prefer not to drive long distances after dark. For these reasons, Seward moved to have the spring meeting on Saturday and the summer and fall meetings on weeknights. The motion was seconded by Danny Sullivan and passed.

A motion to the name the camp’s pools in honor of the Sharp and Landon families was made by Frank Bradford and seconded by Betty Neilson. John Dodd noted that the university traditionally names buildings for large monetary contributors. Larry Harper reminded the board that service can’t be measured by monetary standards. The motion passed. Plaques will be erected at each pool in honor of the two families.

The annual MSYC FISH FRY will be held on July 23, 2005. Tickets will be distributed to board members by request. A list of member responsibilities is attached.

Meeting adjourned.

Respectfully submitted,
L. W. Bloomingburg, Secretary
