MSYC Camp Board Minutes
June 6, 2006

Boo Spears opened the meeting at 7:30 p.m. on June 6, 2006 at the Kirk Dining Hall.

Danny Jackson – had a good fishing rodeo – 92 kids – has cleared $5,700 + so far

Frank Bradford reported:

  • $20,333 was spent on climbing wall and zip line so far

Southwest TN Electric Membership Corporation has donated a lot of time and material to finish the climbing wall

Frank will finish the climbing walls along with other volunteers to save money

He described the 13 elements of the ropes course – the kids really learn to have goals, trust, etc.

He described the application lessons that are taught with the ropes course.

  • Frank told about Junior Camp week – 35 in attendance next time in the week of July 10.

  • Frank told how to get to the ropes course information on the Web page

  • Jack suggested that Board members names be put on the Web site

  • Kelley Swims, a guest of Jack, said that she came with the JCS teachers and that she enjoyed it

  • Cost of ropes course is $25 each plus $18 for staying the night. Minimum is $200.

  • Fish Fry is the 4 th Saturday of July (July 22). Frank will be sending tickets to everyone.

  • Larry will try to fix the one teaching station – that needs a new roof.

  • There are 4 canoes that need new fiberglass – need someone to volunteer to repair these canoes.

  • John McCaskill talked about the dock. People that were going to help backed out. He is still working on a plan to have a floating dock. He will try to have a new plan by the next meeting.

  • Frank related that there are people that want to give to the ropes course.

  • He plans to redo 1 bath house this fall – about $10,000 to $15,000.

  • Jack said that we should clear enough on the Fishing Rodeo and Fish Fry to be able to repair more than 1 bathhouse this fall.

  • Frank reported on the free lunch program for 18 and under kids.

SW TN Welfare Agency is furnishing free lunches and a snack each day: milk, juice, and fruit and sandwich for lunch and a snack in the afternoon

This program is saving MSYC $12,000 in a year’s time (9 weeks)

Wallace-Gano provides box lunches for the adults.

  • Betty Neilson mentioned that we have had too many pies at the Fish Fry. Decision was made to cut amount from 50 pies to 40 pies.

  • Frank has a bluegrass group coming to entertain at the Fish Fry – The Bluegrass Stains.

  • Frank mentioned that the golf cart that MSYC used last year has been left out in the weather at FHU and is ruined. A used golf cart costs about $2,900. MSYC needs one. 2002 model called Workhorse. A new 2005 ranger (demo) has one for $6,700. Gayle said that we need something that has a bed – an ATV. The ranger would be the best.

  • Sissy Gooch is doing great – still taking chemo. Marie Colvett is doing about the same.

  • Yogie Spears led closing prayer.

  • Next Camp Board Meeting is a brunch in Wallace Gano Dining Room on Saturday, October 21, 2006 at 10:30 a.m.
