Mid-South Youth Camp Advisory Board Meeting October 16, 2004
The Mid-South Youth Camp Advisory Board met for its annual fall meeting at Gano Dining Hall on Saturday, October 16, 2004. Board members in attendance were Larry Bloomingburg, Frank Bradford, Fred and Marie Colvett, Robert Farrow, Cynthia Gooch, Larry and Cindy Harper, Larry and Luann Kail, John McCaskill, Jack and Gean Seward, Harry Spears, Jeff Spears and Richard Taylor, Jr. Guests included Bridgett McCoy, Lenita Powers and Cora Sharp.
Chairman Robert Farrow opened the meeting by expressing the board’s appreciation to the Aramark staff for the brunch and by asking board members to remember Frank Bell and Beverly Bradford in prayer. Board members and guests then introduced themselves to the group.
Richard Taylor reported that this summer’s Fish Fry netted a profit of approximately $4500. The current balance in the camp’s special projects fund is $28,000, but 2004 camp operations incurred a loss of $20,000 (copy enclosed). Because of the camp’s operating deficit, a discussion ensued regarding the return of retreat revenue and/or FHU’s camper proceeds to the “operations” fund rather than to the “special projects” fund. Taylor agreed to outline the various options the board has in this matter, so that they may make a more informed decision on this issue at the March 19 meeting.
Camp Director Frank Bradford apologized for the date confusion regarding the fall meeting. He apprised the board of the following updates to the camp website (www.fhu.edu/msyc): 1) a “Christmas Wish List” can now be viewed online. These are camp projects for which individual board members might want to assume responsibility, 2) the “news and information” section now has posted a camp calendar of activities and 3) online camp application submission and payment is still being fine-tuned.
Bradford reported that the pool liner for the newer pool installed earlier this year has been an excellent investment. Similar repairs are also needed for the older pool and will be somewhat more involved, since the contributor tiles lining the pool will have to be removed. Motion was made by Robert Farrow and seconded by Cissy Gooch to allocate $40,000 for the pool renovations. Motion passed. A plaque listing the former contributors to the pool will replace the affected tiles.
Other ideas for future camp improvements are the additions of: 1) a Ropes Course (for team building) – F-H U may fund this, since it would be a primary user of the course, 2) a Climbing Wall and 3) a Zip Line.
Camp personnel, in addition to Director Bradford, are Frank Bell, assistant director, Lenita Powers, crafts/applications/registration, Sandy Cravens, applications/ registration, Gayle McDonald, associate director/athletic injuries specialist and Susan Warren, camp nurse.
In his closing remarks, the director noted that applications for prospective board members are now available and thanked the board members for their continued support of the camp.
In a discussion of how to increase board involvement by inactive board members, the following ideas were mentioned: 1) Cissy Gooch suggested sending a letter to all board members asking for a small monetary contribution toward the MSYC BBQ Dinner to be held during the F-H U Lectureship. 2) Richard Taylor suggested compiling lists of board members that are physically active with camp projects and events, members who, at least, attend board meetings and current donor/members (Jan Sharp noted that each of these groups was vital to camp operations.) This would allow the board to more intelligently purge the board of inactive/non-contributing members. 3) Bridgette McCoy and Cissy Gooch volunteered to call board members before the next meeting to remind them of the importance of their attendance.
Jack Seward proposed having two weeks each year when former campers would be encouraged to come to camp to assist in camp renovations. Larry Harper said that the Alamo young people have gone on weekend retreats to assist in similar camp clean-up efforts. Teens would pay $25 and adults pay $10 to cover the cost of feeding them. A suggested time for such an event might be in April.
NOVEMBER 6, 2004 will be a WORK DAY on the MSYC lake. The event will begin at 8:00 a.m.
Jeff Spears moved to increase camper fees to $140 per week. The motion was seconded by Larry Harper. Motion passed.
