Mid-South Youth Camp
Advisory Board Meeting
October 11, 2005

The Mid-South Youth Camp Advisory Board met for its annual fall meeting at Wallace-Gano Dining Hall on Tuesday, October 11, 2005. Board members in attendance were Frank Bell, Larry and Debbie Bloomingburg, Frank and Beverly Bradford, Stephanie Christensen, Kim Cook, Robert Farrow, Larry and Cindy Harper, Danny Jackson, Ralph and Libby Maynard, Gayle McDonald, John Mehr, Rodney Neilson, James and Altha Rogers, Jack and Gean Seward, Milton Sewell, Roy and Jan Sharp, Boo Spears, Yogi and Betty Spears, Harry Spears, Richard Taylor, Jr., David and Sherry Thomas and Burton Williams. Mitch and Natalie Zlatovich were welcomed as new board members. Guests included Herbert Bradford, Emily and Claire Christensen, Kathy Keeton and Cora Sharp.

Board members were reminded of the passing of board member Jane Magee. Members Marie Colvett (nursing home) and Cissy Gooch (colon cancer) were remembered in prayer.

Camp Director Frank Bradford began the business meeting with an overview of camp and board events. The 2006 MSYC BBQ Dinner will be held this year on Monday night, February 6, during Lectureship Week. Roy Sharp has agreed to cover the cost of cooking the hogs and Jan Sharp will serve as liaison between the Associates and the board for the event. A list is enclosed of board members who have volunteered to work the event.

Bradford reported that this year’s Fish Fry netted a profit of almost $3000. This figure is down from previous years, but the event was still well attended.

$5.00 from each camp registration fee of the 2005 season has been transferred to the camp’s special projects fund for camp improvements and renovations. This has resulted in a net profit of $5300.00 to this account.

Plaques have been acquired to display at the newly designated Landon and Sharp Pools and to honor the memory of Valerie Watrous at the canteen. These will presented to the families at an upcoming F-HU public relations event.

The director encouraged board members to continue to visit the MSYC webiste:

www.fhu.edu/msyc

Board members looking for specific areas in which they can help the camp should visit Frank’s Christmas and Easter Wish List. The website continues to be upgraded and expanded.

The appropriate allocation for the profit from the shaved ice concession will be handled by Richard Taylor.

Bookings for FHU’s Ropes Course - located on the MSYC property - continue to increase. With the addition of the Climbing Wall and the Zip Line, this venue is expected to grow further in popularity. Bradford expressed appreciation to Trent Scott and SWTEMC for donations of approximately $8000 toward the construction of the course.

Evacuees from the hurricane-ravaged Gulf Coast may be housed on camp property this winter. The facilities are being readied for that eventuality.

A used Kubota tractor/mower has been purchased by the camp for $2500 and has decreased MSYC’s dependency on the university’s maintenance staff for grounds keeping.

A week of day camping for children ages 6 – 8 was introduced this summer. It proved to be very popular and may be expanded during the 2006 camp season.

Jack Seward asked Bradford to rank the camp’s most urgent needs. Replacing the deck on the second pool and re-roofing (and, possibly, relocating some of) the teaching stations were identified as the two greatest needs.

Chairman Robert Farrow thanked Bradford for an outstanding first year as Camp Director.

Action on the Pierce-Alexander Award was tabled until the next meeting. Cindy Harper, Betty Neilson, Denise Rinks and Jan Sharp will present their nominees at the March board meeting.

Jeff (Boo) Spears is the incoming chairman for the camp board. Nominations for a vice-Chairman will be taken at the March meeting.

Meeting adjourned.

Respectfully submitted,
L. W. Bloomingburg, Secretary
