Mass Media

Mass Media Major

Nature of Program

The nature of the Mass Media program at Freed-Hardeman is two-fold:

First, it serves as a training ground for students interested in the field of broadcast telecommunications.  Radio station WFHU is a 10,500 watt non-commercial/educational FM broadcasting facility that provides a “real world” experience in training students in announcing, production, sports play-by-play, news, weather, and marketing.  TV-40 is the cable-access only television station, which provides student training in production, editing, news gathering, camera operation and talent work.

Secondly, the two facilities offer the community access to programming not readily available through other media outlets.  Both WFHU and TV-40 provide an alternative for listeners and viewers.

Of course we want as many Mass Media Majors as we can get.  However, you do not have to be a media major to work at the radio station.  We do encourage all of our majors to minor in communications, with a special emphasis on the media class offerings.
