Peabody's Perry Signs with Lady Lions
HENDERSON, Tenn. – April 2, 2008 – Just two weeks after making an NAIA final four appearance, the Freed-Hardeman Lady Lions have already strengthened themselves in the post for next season with the signing of Trenton Peabody’s Rakeshia Perry to a scholarship.
Perry, a 5-foot-10 forward, was a four-year starter for the Lady Tide under head coach Tere Lumley. Lumley beamed with pride at the signing ceremony when announcing Perry’s decision.
“I’ve coached for 16 years and I’ve had very few players that I would consider program-changers,” she said. “Rakeshia is one of them. We’re pleased she will have the opportunity to play for four more years.”
“She adds a lot to us offensively,” Freed-Hardeman head coach Dale Neal said. “She’s proven that she can score and she’s a great offensive rebounder. She doesn’t just look at herself but is aware of team play. She’s quick to praise her teammates for the accolades she received in high school.”
While at Peabody, Perry was a four-time all-district selection and a two-time all-region selection. As a freshman in 2005, she helped the Lady Tide to a Class A state championship and was named to the all-tournament team. She was the District 14-A MVP as a senior and was chosen to play in the TACA East-West All-Star Game. Perry was also selected to the Jackson Sun 2008 All-West Tennessee team. In her high school career, Perry scored 1,262 points and grabbed 842 rebounds.
Perry joins Julia Myers (Waynesboro, Tenn./Wayne Co. HS), Rachel Melson (Waynesboro, Tenn./Wayne Co. HS), and Hannah Parsley (Jonesboro, Ark./Rector HS) in FHU’s 2008-09 recruiting class. She is the daughter of Toni Brown.

Lady Lions Sign Arkansas Standout
Henderson, Tenn.- The Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lion basketball team has landed their third early signee for the 2008-2009 season. Rector High School’s Hannah Parsley signed with the Lady Lions on Tuesday and will join the team next fall after finishing her senior year of high school.
Parsley, a 5’8 guard, averaged 13 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 assists per game during her junior season. She was named All-Conference, All-NEA, and All-Region. Hannah was also chosen as the Jonesboro Sun Female Athlete of the Week and was selected to their Best Under the Sun team. She led her team in 3-pointers made with 61.
Away from basketball, Hannah plays softball and was named All-Conference and carried the highest batting average for her team. She is also a member of the Arkansas High School Rodeo Team and was named Miss Teen Rodeo Arkansas 1st Runner-up. Parsley is a member of several groups at RHS including the Honor Society, the German Club, the Pep Club, FFA, and Tone.
“Hannah has the complete package of guard skills,” said Lady Lion Head Coach Dale Neal. “She has good quickness, handles the ball well, shoots the 3, and can defend. She fits into our style of play extremely well and will be able to contribute immediately. Hannah will do very well at the college level because of her competitiveness and strong work ethic.”

Myers Signs Early with Lady Lions
Henderson, Tn.- The Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lion basketball program has inked an early signee for the 2008-09 season. Julia Myers, a junior at Wayne County High School, has signed to play for the Lady Lions after she finishes her high school career next spring.
Myers, a 5’9 guard, averaged 8.7 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 4.8 assists per game last season as a junior. Julia was named an All-District performer last year as she led her team in assists and helped the Lady Cats finish with a record of 25-8. She finished the year shooting 34.4% from 3-point range and 80.6% from the free throw line.
Away from the basketball court, Myers is also an All-District player on the soccer field. She is active in Wayne County High School’s Beta Club, Future Business Leaders of America, Business Professionals of America, and FCA. Julia was elected a class officer during her junior year and carries a 4.0 GPA.
“Julia does a great job of penetrating the defense and dishing off to the open player,” Lady Lion Head Coach Dale Neal said. “She is a very versatile player because she can drive by defenders or hurt teams with her outside shooting. She has a fierce mentality on the defensive end of the floor and is not afraid to be physical. Julia has already shown us she will fit in well with our style of play, yet she still has a whole year of high school basketball to play.”

Melson Makes Early Decision
Henderson, Tn.- The Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lions signed Wayne County’s Rachel Melson on Thursday. Melson, a junior at Wayne County High School, will join the Lady Lions for the 2008-09 season after her high school career has ended.
Melson, a 5’9 guard, averaged 13.4 points, 4.8 rebounds, 2.6 assists, and 4.7 steals per game as a junior last year. Rachel has been named All-District twice and All-Region last season. She finished the year leading her team in field goal percentage (59.6%) as she helped the Lady Cats finish the year with a record of 25-8.
At WCHS, Melson is a member of the Future Business Leaders of America, Business Professionals of America, Beta Club, and FCA. Rachel was selected as her class Treasurer during her junior year and holds a 4.0 GPA.
“Rachel has excellent anticipation on defense,” FHU Head Coach Dale Neal said. “It is very difficult to pass around her because of her quickness and athleticism. On the offensive end of the floor, she has the ability to drive and pull up for the jumper or step back to drain a 3-pointer. Although she has another year of high school basketball to play, we have already seen that Rachel blends in well with our team’s style of play.”
