A CAMPUS MOURNS
Students gathered in Loyd Auditorium on Monday March 24, 2008 for a
special chapel service as the Freed-Hardeman University campus mourns
the loss of Shane Ruiz. Ruiz, a freshman media arts major, drowned in
the Dominican Republic while on a Spring Break mission campaign with
FHU social club Sigma Rho.
“Some people wonder if chapel is a good thing,” said Roy Sharp, FHU
Bible professor and daily chapel emcee. “On days like today we are
grateful for this opportunity. I am so glad we can gather as a
community to pray together and lift up our needs to our God together.”
The auditorium seats were filled with students and faculty dressed in
black and gold, Sigma Rho’s club colors, to show their support.
Students and sponsors who were on the campaign trip with Ruiz were
seated in two front rows as prayers were lifted up for the Ruiz
family, the Freed-Hardeman student body and the continued mission
work being done in the Dominican Republic.
“We are a family,” said FHU president Milton Sewell, “we feel
everything together and today we hurt and we pray together.”
