From
the Dean
As we begin our second semester in the Brown-Kopel
Business Center,
I want to thank everyone for their support of the School
of Business at Freed-Hardeman
University. It is difficult to
explain how exciting it has been to settle into our new home. Brown-Kopel is
truly a beautiful, state-of-the-art facility. Everyone has enjoyed the
spacious classrooms and excellent computer labs. Ayers Auditorium has been
put to good use. Students are, of course, enjoying the entire building. Many
students seem to be especially happy with the study rooms.
On behalf of the faculty,
staff, and every student in the School
of Business, I
wish you a wonderful new year filled with peace and joy. Please visit when
you can; you are always welcome.

Rich Brown Runs for Kids
On December 6, FHU School
of Business faculty member Rich Brown completed the St.
Jude Memphis Marathon in a time of 3:27:13,
his best time ever. He was able to deliver a contribution of $6,000.04 to St.
Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Dr. Brown raised the money by asking
members of the FHU and Chester County
communities to sponsor him as he ran the 26.2 mile race. Brown says the weekend was one of the very
best of his life because he ran well, but especially because of the large
amount of money he was able to collect and take to help the work at St. Jude. “I was proud to be from Chester
County and especially proud to be
part of the FHU family. Of the $6,000
contributed more than $4,500 was given on campus. It was for a great cause and people with
big hearts responded by opening their wallets.” More than 200 runners, known as St. Jude
Heroes, participated in the fundraising aspect of the marathon and as a group
raised about $160,000; Dr. Brown’s total raised was the third largest and all
the money was given in a two-week period.
The
night before the marathon Brown attended a spaghetti supper put on for the
Heroes and heard a dad talk about finding out his 16 month old son had a
terrible cancer and the story of how his boy was treated by the people at St.
Jude. It was a long story, full of
difficulty, fear, and hope. At the
story’s end Brown says he new St. Jude had done its best, and this father
deeply appreciated it, but did not know if the little boy had lived or
died. The big mystery was solved when
“Gus,” now three or four years old, ran from the audience and jumped into his
dad’s arms. Brown says “there were no
dry eyes in the room” and “I shook Gus’s hand a few minutes later and told
his mother I was proud for them.”
Looking back at the weekend Brown had these comments. “Meeting Gus and his folks and remembering
the stories of people on campus and in Henderson
who have been treated at St. Jude made me aware of the wonderful things being
done in that hospital and that the people who support it are the ones who
make them possible. It was humbling to
be able to help and really made me count my blessings.”
Brown plans to run the marathon
and raise money for St. Jude again next year and has set the goal of raising
$20,000. “Given what people were
willing and able to give in two short weeks I think $20,000 is possible. It is such a good cause and I am surrounded
by such generous people. I don’t
really like asking people for money, but for this I will. I was amazed at how willing people were to
give.” Anyone who would like help
Brown achieve his goal can contact him by e-mail at rtbrown@fhu.edu or phone by calling (731)
989-6098.
Career Café
The School
of Business and
the Career Resource
Center hosted two fall events
designed to assist seniors in preparing for life after FHU. On October 30,
Mrs. June Creasy of Jackson
presented a “Dress for Success” seminar with a special emphasis on business
etiquette. On November 20, those who had attended the seminar enjoyed a
multi-course meal where they practiced their etiquette skills and interacted
with local business professionals.
Ethics & Leadership Seminar
Mr. James L. Gardner, Executive
Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer of Massey Energy Corporation,
spoke at the annual Ethics & Leadership Seminar for senior business
students on November 7. The purpose of the seminar is to further educate and
prepare students for leadership roles and how to properly deal with the
inevitable ethical dilemmas awaiting them in the workforce.
ACBSP Visit
The School
of Business
will host an Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP)
reaffirmation committee February
22-25, 2004. For the past year, business faculty
and staff members have worked to prepare a self-study report. The report was
submitted in December, and we look forward to a successful visit and the
reaffirmation of our ACBSP accreditation.
